The Coming Day Of The Lord

Will the coming of the Lord be a global crisis? Let’s talk about it.

Many people look forward to “the return of the Lord.” There is much agreement that such an event is just what the world needs “to make all things right.” But, when all is considered about “the second coming” of Jesus, not many people would actually want to be present on our Earth when that event actually takes place. There will be a great difference to be found in Jesus, “The Lamb of God,” (John 1:29) as opposed to Jesus, “The Lion Of Judah,” (Revelation 5:5-6). The following discussion of the times and events that call for the judgement of Jesus, “The Lion Of Judah,” are very telling of the times and events that we find facing us in our world today. Israel, the church, and the message of Christ have never had so many attackers, as which there are today. There is no reason to think that things will get any better. The key is to not be “left behind,” when many of the world’s population leave in an upward flight, unannounced. In future posts of this series, we will discuss the “way out” from all of the bad things that will happen,”to test those who live on the earth.” (Rev 3:10).

This area of prophecy of the end times by the prophet Zechariah, focuses on the return of the Lord Jesus in glory at the Battle of Armageddon. The prophecy date of this 14th chapter of Zechariah is 487 B.C. (Scofield). The prophecy is given by the prophet to Jews who had returned to Judea from 70 years of exile in Babylon. Zechariah, Introduction By Dr. Charles R. Swindoll, “Insight For Living Ministries”

Zechariah prophesied to the people of Judah after they returned from their seventy years of exile in Babylon (Zechariah 1:1; Nehemiah 12:1, 4, 16). Zechariah’s grandfather returned from Babylon, his young grandson in tow, with the first group of Israelites allowed back, in 538 BC under the decree of Cyrus, king of Persia. Because of his family lineage, Zechariah was a priest in addition to a prophet. He, therefore, would have had an intimate familiarity with the worship practices of the Jews, even if he had never served in a completed temple. As a “young man” at the time of his first prophecies (Zechariah 2:4), his life more than likely extended into the reign of Xerxes I (485–465 BC), the king best known in the Bible for making Esther the queen of Persia (Esther 1:1).1 .

Zechariah 14:1-9 English Standard Version (ESV)

1 Behold, a day is coming for the Lord, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in your midst.

14:1 a day is coming for the Lord. The Old Testament prophets proclaimed a “day of the Lord” for judgment and deliverance, both of which are present in this passage (Introduction to Zephaniah: Characteristics and Themes). (RSB) (See Scofield note at bottom on Rev 19:19)

14:1 day of the Lord, Ryrie. A description of one of the last battles of the campaign of Armageddon. See Rev 16:14. Jerusalem will be taken and the spoil divided. Just when the armies of the nations seem undefeatable, Jerusalemites will receive supernatural strength (Zech 12:8) and Jesus personally and visible will return to the Mount of Olives,, causing it to split and provide a valley through which survivors may flee. HOLY ONES. Perhaps believers who having been previously taken to heaven return.

14:1 day of the Lord. Mac Arthur. It is a technical term for God’s wrath unleashed against sinners. Here, Zechariah is looking at the Day of the Lord when His wrath is unleashed against the whole world of sinners; which results in the establishment of the Lord’s millennial reign on Earth.

The day of the Lord is also related to times when God intervenes in the affairs of sinful mankind, such as the rapture, tribulation, millennium, battle of Armageddon, and battle of God and Magog.

2 For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women raped. Half of the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. 3 Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle. 4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward. 5 And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

14:5 Azal. Clearly a place close to Jerusalem; its precise location is unknown. RSB

holy ones. An expression found also in the New Testament (Jude 14; cf. Matt. 25:31). These are God’s chosen servants, the angelic host (perhaps humans as well), coming to Jerusalem to liberate it from pagan aggressors. This day of battle ushers in the eternal bliss of God’s special presence among His people. (RSB)

See Revelation 19:14. “And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses.” (English Standard Version). The word “humans” that is seen in the previous note relates to humans who had been raptured and will be returning to earth for this spiritual battle at Armageddon.

6 On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost. 7 And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light.

14:7 a unique day . . . there shall be light. God Himself will be the light of the city (Is. 60:19, 20; Rev. 21:25; 22:5). Natural light from the heavenly bodies will have ceased (v. 6). (RSB)

8 On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter.

14:8 living waters . . . from Jerusalem. As the result of the Lord’s presence, a refreshing stream of running water brings healing to those who seek refuge in the Lord. Such water symbolizes the blessings of salvation (Is. 55:1–5; Ezek. 47:1–12; John 4:10–14). Believers in Jesus receive the living water only He can give (John 7:37–39; Rev. 22:1). (RSB)

9 And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one.

14:9 king over all the earth. With the final victory, God’s sovereignty over all is manifested. RSB.

the Lord will be one and his name one. These words clearly draw on Deut. 6:4, Israel’s foundational confession (Mark 12:29 note). Only on this day of victory will the full meaning of this confession be understood. (RSB)

Signs Of The End Of The Age

This area of scripture is based on a discussion that Jesus was having with Jews. He spoke about the end times, which are times that have not yet arrived, in our time or in the past. He spoke about events that will affect the Jews in Israel who are alive during the end times, The term “Age” relates to the church age, and can also be called “the times of the Gentiles,” and “Jacob’s trouble,” which also relate to “The Day Of The Lord.” The church age will end when the “rapture of the church” occurs, which will be discussed later. (Matthew 28:19-20; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; 1 Corinthians 15:50-52). The discussion on the “Signs Of The End Of The Age” begins after the following notes, and will be shown in Matthew 24:3 scripture and comments.

24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

21:24 the times of the Gentiles. The period of Gentile domination of Jerusalem, which probably began under Nebuchadnezzar (587 B.C.); was certainly in effect in 70 A.D. and continues into the Tribulation (cf. Rev 11:2). (Ryrie).

30:7 That day. The day of the Lord; see Amos 5:18; 8:9. Amos’s generation expected it as a day of deliverance, but had to learn that it would bring judgment. RSB

18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! to what end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.

5:18 the day of the Lord. Ultimately, this is the great and terrible “day of the Lord” when He comes in judgment (cf. Is. 2:12; 13:6–13; Obad. 15; Zeph. 1:7, 14). Every Old Testament judgment was also a “day of the Lord,” and anticipated that final day. Joel described it as a day of terrible judgment and destruction (Joel 1:15–20; 2:11), although it would also be accompanied by a redemptive outpouring of God’s Spirit (Joel 2:28–32). RSB

9 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:

8:9 the earth. Or, “the land,” since the land of Israel was to be punished. The phrase directly recalls the plague of darkness that the Lord brought upon the land of Egypt (cf. Ex. 10:21). Here again, the Lord is about to judge Israel with a judgment similar to that of Egypt. RSB

Signs Of The End Of The Age

3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 4 And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.

9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. 10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

24:4–14 Wars, earthquakes, persecutions, and false prophets are all signs of Jesus’ coming, but they indicate only the certainty of judgment, not its time (vv. 6, 8). Such signs characterize the entire period between His resurrection and His coming in judgment. Knowing when Jesus would return would lead His disciples to laziness and laxity in their watchfulness. The “when” (v. 3) that Jesus gives is task oriented: it is after the gospel has been preached to the nations (v. 14). RSB

The Abomination of Desolation

15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),

24:15 abomination of desolation. The phrase is from Daniel; in Dan. 9:27; 11:31 it refers to the desecration of the temple by Antiochus Epiphanes. In 168 b.c. Antiochus erected a pagan altar in the temple. According to Josephus, he also sacrificed swine there. Shortly before a.d. 70 the Zealots were in the temple precincts during the war with Rome, and their presence could have been considered a desecration. In a.d. 70 the Romans entered the temple with military standards, ceremonial insignia that were elements of their religion. They took away the sacred vessels, including the lampstand, and burned the temple. Sculptures of their troops carrying the vessels are visible on the Arch of Titus in Rome. RSB

let the reader understand. Possibly not a comment by the evangelist but by Jesus. In either case, the sense is not “whoever reads this Gospel,” but “whoever reads Daniel.” RSB

16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, 18 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 19 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. 22 And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. 23 Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

The Coming of the Son of Man

29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

No One Knows That Day and Hour

36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

(vs 42 and 44 are statements that Jesus relates specifically to this passage, and not to the rapture of the church. That is not to say that we can know the date of the rapture, only that Jesus is not using these statement to relate to the rapture. These are two separate events, of which the rapture will have already occurred before the event of this passage of Matthew Chapter 24).

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 47 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. 48 But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, 50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know 51 and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Sixth Bowl Judgement: Euphrates dried up (during the Tribulation, preceding the Battle of Armageddon.)

Leading up to this passage, the following events will have occurred.

The Rapture of the church, (Revelation 4:1) and the beginning of the tribulation which will continue until Revelation 19:21(Ryrie Study Bible; Mac Arthur Study Bible).

The judgements of God on the Earth begin.

Seven seal judgements: Revelation 6:1 through Revelation 8:6.

Seven trumpet judgements: Revelation 8:7 through Revelation 9:21.

Seven bowl judgements: Revelation 15:1 through Revelation 16:21.

The church has been removed from this world in the Rapture (1 Thes 4:16-17). (Rev 4:1). God does not have a problem with the born again believers of the church. His battle is with those who are trying to destroy Israel.

10 Because you have kept My command to endure,I will also keep you from the hour of testing that is going to come over the whole world to test those who live on the earth.

Ryrie: A promise that believers will be delivered from the time of Tribulation that will come upon the earth (Matt 24:14-21). See note on 1 Thes 4:16-17.

Mac Arthur: In agreement with Ryrie.

Holman Christian Standard Bible: “Those who live on the earth,” are those who will be tested.
They have not had their names written in the book of life (Rev 17:8)

Believers in Christ have already been tested, and found to have been born again with their names written in the book of life. As previously stated, God does not have a reason to test those who have already been tested. Remember the words, “to test those.”

The sixth bowl judgement follows, and announces the gathering of the enemies of God in Israel for the Battle of Armageddon (vs 16). ” The day of God” is announced in vs 14. God is beginning to intervene in the affairs of sinful mankind.

12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east. 13 And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs. 14 For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. 15 (“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”) 16 And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

Consider the drying up of the Euphrates River (vs 12).. It will expedite the armies who will be on their way to attack Jerusalem at the Battle of Armageddon (Mac Arthur).

The Rider on a White Horse

Revelation 19:11-21 English Standard Version (ESV)

11 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, “Come, gather for the great supper of God, 18 to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great.” 19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. 20 And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. 21 And the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.

19:11–21 The sixth cycle of judgments leading to the Second Coming is presented in these verses. In the latter cycles the imagery concentrates more and more intensively on the Second Coming and the events that immediately precede it. In this cycle, all the events are actually part of the Second Coming. But, as is typical of Revelation, they reveal principles of spiritual war that have been operative throughout the church age (Eph. 6:10–20; 1 John 5:4, 5). At the end, Jesus Christ is revealed (22:13; Heb. 13:8). RSB

Christ appears to wage final battle against all the enemies of God, led by the beast and the false prophet. Christ’s holy attributes contrast markedly with the unholy counterfeit attributes of the beast (13:1–10 note). This final war brings to a climax all the wars that God has waged on behalf of His people (Ex. 15:2; Deut. 20; Is. 59:16–18; Ezek. 38; 39; Hab. 3:8–15; Zech. 12:1–9; 14:3–5) and consummates the triumph achieved by Christ on the cross (5:9, 10; 12:10, 11; John 12:31; Col. 2:15). Verse 19 (The day of the Lord, Scofield)

The day of Jehovah (called, also, “that day,” and “the great day”) is that lengthened period of time beginning with the return of the Lord in glory, and ending with the purgation of the heavens and the earth by fire preparatory to the new heavens and the new earth Isaiah 65:17-19; Isaiah 66:22; 2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:1. The order of events appears to be:
(1) The return of the Lord in glory Matthew 24:29; Matthew 24:30
(2) the destruction of the Beast and his host, “the kings of the earth and their armies,” and the false prophet, which is the “great and terrible” aspect of the day Revelation 19:11-21.
(3) the judgment of the nations Zechariah 14:1-9; Matthew 25:31-46.
(4) the thousand years, i.e, the kingdom-age Revelation 20:4-6.
(5) the Satanic revolt and its end Revelation 20:7-10.
(6) the second resurrection and final judgment Revelation 20:11-15 and
(7) the “day of God,” earth purged by fire 2 Peter 3:10-13.
The day of the Lord is preceded by seven signs:
(1) The sending of Elijah Malachi 4:5; Revelation 11:3-6
(2) cosmical disturbances Joel 2:1-12; Matthew 24:29; Acts 2:19; Acts 2:20; Revelation 6:12-17
(3) the insensibility of the professing church 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3
(4) the apostasy of the professing church, then become “Laodicea” 2 Thessalonians 2:3
(5) the rapture of the true church 1 Thessalonians 4:17.
(6) the manifestation of the “man of sin,” the Beast 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8
(7) the apocalyptic judgments (Revelation 11-18.).

Whether Jesus is “the Lamb of God,” or “the Lion of Judah,” He is Holy…at all times, for all purposes, for all eternity. Let us consider the Holiness of Jesus as we are led in worship by the song of Terry Mac Almon.
